When it comes to making a space cozy, inviting, and versatile, what could be better than using blankets? These soft accent pieces are my favorite way to add texture to any room. Blankets are easy to change out each season, and they make a space look complete.

They’re a useful tool that also puts the final touch on your style, so I love to incorporate them everywhere in our house. They are an inexpensive and simple way to change the look of a whole space, so I always keep a few options on hand. It’s nice to have different weights and levels of warmth, too, so you can be comfortable and cozy year round.

Today, I’m showing you how to make a fluffy blanket for under $10 and in less than 30 minutes.

Why Blankets are Great to Have and Make

Blankets let you change out your look with a quick toss.

Want to change up your style or color scheme from time to time? Then, makes use of blankets. I like to keep my furniture and rugs on the neutral side so it’s easy to switch out colors. Blankets are a great way to add a pop of color without committing to it long-term. It’s fun to change things up each season or on a whim, and having a few blankets to rotate through is the perfect way to do it.

Blankets are a useful accessory.

Blankets aren’t just a pretty item for your decor collection; they’re useful! I love choosing blankets that match my style because it adds to the look instead of stands out like an eyesore. Since adopting a more minimalist approach, I’m always looking for versatile items that have multiple purposes. So blankets are perfect for creating more cozy and style.

Blankets add a lot of texture.

Along with pillows and baskets, blankets are my favorite way to finalize a space. They all add that extra layer of texture to add depth and interest. It’s easy to focus on color and overlook textiles, so if there’s something missing in a space, it’s usually texture. Blankets add instant texture, and I love adding them through a room.

Blankets are easy to store in plain sight.

Blankets don’t have to be stored in a bin in the closet; they’re easy to throw in a basket or drape of the sofa. This way, they’re always ready to be used and they can be kept nearby.

My favorite way to store blankets is inside a basket. I keep my living room blankets inside a rattan and black basket in the living room. And in the bedroom, I keep the throw blankets inside a cloth BIN.

Tutorial: How to Make a Blanket in 30 Minutes for $10

Let’s jump into today’s simple sewing DIY for making an easy blanket for under $10.

All it takes is a basic sewing machine and a piece of fabric. You can adjust the size to anything you choose.

Materials

  • 2 yards of your favorite fuzzy fabric

  • Matching thread

Tools

  • Scissors

  • Pins

  • Basic sewing machine with needle and bobbin

Step 1

Spread your fabric out and straighten the cut edges with your scissors, if required. Sometimes when they cut your fabric at the store, the edges are a little wonky. So take a look and see if you need to recut the edges to fix them.

Step 2

Roll the edges, and pin in place. Since my goal for this project was to make this blanket as easy and simple to make, I only sewed the two raw edges of my fabric. The other two bound edges looked okay, so I didn’t bother to cut and sew them. If I wanted this to look professional, I definitely would have finished all four edges.

And that’s it!
